Joie (ジョア Joa) the Dark Chef (闇の料理人 Yami no Ryōrijin) was a legendary chef from long ago and one of the major antagonists of Toriko's Gourmet World Act. It was he who would have become the world's first "Super Cook", but due to his rule-breaking and dark deeds, his chances at fame were forever lost and his name was intentionally suppressed and buried in the annals of history.

He is the former personal Chef of Darnil Kahn, the king of Jidar, and is the leader of the secret organization known as NEO. He is the only man alive known to be able to completely remove the poison from a Poison Potato and is in possession of information related to many amazing ingredients including the phantasmal drink from Acacia's Full Course Menu, ATOM. Joie claims that the legendary "Chef Goddess" Froese is his "mother,"[1] but in truth he is a mysterious Food Spirit who took over Froese's body sometime after her death.[2]

With Joie's appearance and the identity of NEO revealed, the Dark Chef serves as one of the main antagonists of the series during the second half of the Human World Act, and serves as a major antagonist during the events of the Gourmet World Act.

Appearance[]

He is a tall, thin individual who normally wears a colorful blue, yellow and purple full-body outfit with an ornate chef's hat which normally only leaves his eyes visible. His stylized hat has several points hanging from it with small balls, which were revealed to be Life Orbs at the ends, which combined with his colorful clothing makes him resemble a medieval jester.

Joa unmasked

Joie's true appearance.

On other occasions, mainly when he needs to act in stealth or whilst preparing to engage in battle, he has been shown wearing a fully black outfit with a cloak and a hood which leaves only his eyes visible. The rest of his body is covered by a dress that reaches his knees, along with trousers, long boots and gloves which are all black in color.

His true appearance greatly resembles the "Chef Goddess" Froese, having the same face and hair as the holy chef, although his face appears to be covered in what appear to be either numerous scars, veins or cracks, and his eyes have slit pupils and his hair has numerous little balls hanging from them like the ones on his chef's hat. The reason for his similar appearance to Froese is in truth due to Joie being a spirit that took the opportunity to possess the deceased Froese's body during Midora's attempts to revive the Chef Goddess. His true appearance before taking over Froese's revived body is unknown, however his possession of Froese's body allowed him to change the body's personal attributes to fit his own, such as his gender and physique thanks to Froese's consumption of the legendary Food King PAIR.

Personality[]

Joie is a mysterious individual whose identity and goals are shrouded in mystery. He rarely displays any emotion and is always seen with an ever present smile on his face, making it hard to determine what his actual thoughts and feelings are. All that is certain is that he is a merciless and uncaring individual who will do whatever it takes to further his goals and obtain "GOD and beyond", willing to kill any who oppose him or present even a minor threat to his plans, and when in battle he will needlessly create devastating levels of destruction to destroy those that stand in his way without caring of any bystanders who may fall victim to his actions. His desire to achieve his goals by any means necessary is not only limited to his grand schemes, as his pride and desire for victory was also apparent during his debut in the first Cooking Festival where he was willing to break the rules to earn the title of "Super Cook". He is completely devoid of remorse or compassion and will gladly manipulate the minds of others to obey his every whim or even help in the collapse of the Human World's stability if it furthers his plans. Despite his cold and selfish personality, he appears to have a great deal of respect and admiration for the Gourmet Nobles, displaying an unexpected sense of humility in their presence and addressing them in the most respectful and honorable way possible, but these feelings of admiration are simply part of his manipulative tactics. His true allegiance lies with Acacia himself, whom he shows a great deal of respect to despite Acacia's destructive personality.

Joie's remains calm in the heat of battle and has great confidence in his own abilities even when being pushed back. His hubris comes from his own skills as a chef as well as his great control over his Food Luck. His overconfidence however, is also his greatest flaw as he becomes blinded by this hubris that he overlooks his opponents. Starjun is one such opponent that he underestimates, the other being Midora, whom he thought he defeated but only merely managed to seal away and stall from the battle. His overconfidence has even allowed Midora to copy what is perhaps the most important trait in a chef: Food Luck.

Powers and Abilities[]

Joie is one of the best chefs in the world, and he would have won the very first Cooking Festival had he not broken several rules. He also has important data regarding Acacia's Full Course Menu. Joie was originally speculated by Setsuno to be very strong, as she assumed, correctly, that the new scar near Zaus' eye was his doing, and blamed the "Chef King" for lowering his guard; however, he replied he never got distracted for a moment. Mahmai Moi was confident enough in his abilities that he believed NEO could challenge anyone present at the Cooking Fest due to his imminent arrival. He was also shown to easily intimidate Teppei, a Saiseiya said to be on par with the Four Heavenly Kings in terms of power, who even believed that had it not been for the Saiseiya Network rescuing him, Joie would have killed him with ease. In fact, Teppei even states that merely facing Joie gave him the feeling that he was going to be 'cooked.' His presence alone is sensed at once by all the best fighters in the arena and prompts two Nitro to go into the stadium to attack him. Toward the end of the fight at Cooking Fest, Joie shows the true extent of his combat prowess: he manages to wound Setsuno, whom he would acknowledge as one of the world's top fighters shortly after, and comes out unscathed from a confrontation with both her and Jiro, one of the three legendary disciples of Acacia.

His information network as a member of NEO is considerable as he knew about the secret meeting between Ichiryu and Midora as well as the fact that Toriko wished to confront him, even before the king of Jidar did. He also reasoned that confronting Toriko's group would be meaningless and possibly detrimental and exited Jidar long before they came to the castle, and kept Teppei's brainwashing a secret until the last minute by working on an already existing scar.

His physical abilities remain largely unknown. He manages to cut Nitros without effort and at such speed that they could not avoid his slash. This is a note-worthy feat as Nitro are shown to have incredible speed, being able to bite Ozone Herb in two places at once; as well as, being durable enough to break Livebearer's knives when he tried attacking them. He is strong enough to launch an attack with his knife capable of destroying a building and slicing the sea. When confronting Midora, Joie was able to detect a slight surprise in the Gourmet Corps. boss and land a blow on him from a small distance all in 0.01 seconds, although in the end the attack proved to be ineffective and the cook failed to notice that Midora had counterattacked exploiting his opening.

Gourmet Cells[]

Joie has eaten some parts of Acacia's Full Course, as he is capable of turning his body into that of his Appetite Demon, but has not eaten GOD nor CENTER, as the Demon still resides within him.

Like "Chef Goddess" Froese, Joie can use the power of his Gourmet Cells in conjunction with his cooking.

Appetite Demon[]

Joa's Appetite Demon

Joie's Appetite Demon

Joie was revived with his own Appetite Demon, rather than inheriting Froese's. This Appetite Demon was shown to be very old, having great memory of Gourmet Cells. It was revealed to be very appetite-obsessed, claiming that nothing else mattered and that appetite governs all existence.

Chef Skills[]

Joie is the personal chef of the (former) head of a country. As such, his abilities in cooking must be of the highest grade. He was said to be the only man capable of completely removing the venom from a Poison Potato, a feat that even Setsuno is not capable of. He was also revealed to be the first chef to win the Cooking Festival. However, it is unclear if his cooking skills are superior or inferior to Setsuno's since it is implied that he needed to break certain rules to take first place.

Food Luck[]

He has inherited Froese's unparalleled Food Luck (食運 Shoku'un) and makes use of it offensively with Gourmet Luck (グルメラック Gurume Rakku),[3] which allows his blows to land and his opponents' to miss. However, there seems to be a limit to how often and for how long he can this ability.[4] It took two separate battles with Midora and defeating Starjun and three of the Four Heavenly Kings sans Toriko for his Gourmet Luck to finally be depleted enough that it fails to heed Joie's call.

Equipment[]

Through unknown means, Joie has managed to obtain the kitchen knife that once belonged to Froese, Cinderella (claiming that it it his for that very reason). It is a beautiful blade of the finest quality with which he is capable of using his Taste Change technique and utilize the power of his Gourmet Cells in the process.

Joie wears several Life Orbs of varying sizes and has been working on purifying them.[5][6] They contain Food Spirits, which, when the wearer takes a fatal amount of damage, act as substitutes, and thus the wearer will be left unscathed.

He also has a set of Golden Cookware[7] and uses the Golden Chopping Board (金のまな板 Kinno Manaita) to block one of Zebra's attacks.[8]

Techniques[]

Tasting Scope small

Tasting Scope (テイスティングスコープ Teisutingu Sukōpu): A type of vision that allows Joie to see and measure the strength of any creature by their "flavor" and "savoriness." He claims that thought determines "flavor" and that life energy determines "savoriness".[9]

Taste Change small

Taste Change (テイストチェンジ Teisuto Chenji): Using the Cinderella knife, Joie slashes his opponent, leaving a visible scar. Joie refers to this technique as a form of cooking which allows him to change a person's thought and thus, their "flavor."[10] Implanting a special bacteria into the wound proceeds to alter the mind and perception of its victim.[11] This powerful technique effectively brainwashes and turns the slashed opponent into a minion of Joie. The Nitro he demonstrates this on are instantly subjected, but it is unclear how much time is needed to take over a stronger person's will: for example, Teppei seems to be normal after being rescued by Pukin (although this may have been an act). Knocking that affect a person down to their very cells are known to be able to terminate the effect.

Flavor Flow blocks Million Slice Fillet small

100 Million Slice Fillet (億枚おろし Oku Mai Oroshi): Joie swings Cinderella in a serpentine pattern which creates a slash made out of either pressurized air or Appetite Energy. When blocked by Setsuno's special defensive move, the attack disperses into a powerful and gigantic blast made up of millions of smaller cuts capable of cleaving through buildings and even the sea with ease, travelling for various kilometers. Not even the aforementioned Gourmet Living Legend comes out unscathed from this technique, reporting minor wounds all over her body. Joie initially belieces that only Acacia's three disciples could defend against it, and expresses surprise when Setsuno blocks it.[12] While it proves too much for Sunny's Satan Hair, Joie is still impressed that his hair can consume it.[13]

Freshness UP Revitalizing Cut small

Freshness UP Revitalizing Cut (鮮度UP蘇生切り Sendo Appu Sosei Giri): A dark technique in which Cinderella is thrust into the ground and creates a shock wave of slashes that spreads around its surroundings, healing and awakening any fallen creature in the vicinity, much like a defibrillator. It also has the special property of enhancing the targets' physical abilities while making them minions of Joie as well.[14]

Instant Shedding small

Instant Shedding (瞬間脱皮 Shunkan Dappi): A technique where Joie sheds his heavy outer coat quickly enough to surprise fighters of Setsuno and Jiro's caliber, combined with a movement to either retreat or attack his opponents. He could jump up so high that he almost reached clouds after using it.[15]

Joie triggers God Cooking

God Cooking (神の料理術ゴッドクッキング Goddo Kukkingu): A Dark Technique that allows Joie to perform complex cooking and other powerful techniques regardless his condition, thanks to the power of his Gourmet Cells. It makes his facial appearance change substantially too, becoming more monstrous.[16]

Sky Cut small

Sky Cut (そら Sora Giri): A horizontal swing of Cinderella that is powerful enough to obliterate a massive tsunami (gigantic earth pillars in the anime). It can also create a vacuum to suck up enemy attacks. Setsuno states that this technique originally belonged to Froese.[17]

Satan Mince small

Satan Mince (魔王のみじん切りサタンミンチ Satan Minchi, literally meaning "Devil's Mincing"): A powerful cooking technique used by revealing Joie's Gourmet Cells. After changing into a demonic appearance, Joie is able to mince a powerful enemy attack with Cinderella. With it, he blocks Jiro's Guinness Punch, which the latter claims is powerful enough to rise all the way to outer space.[18]

Satan Hole

Satan Hole (魔王の風穴サタンホール Satan Hōru, literally meaning "Devil's Air Hole"): Joie holds Cinderella to an opponent and twists the blade quickly, generating an enormous drill of air.[19]

Planet Rotary Cut

Planet Rotary Cut (惑星かつら剥き Wakusei Katsuramuki, Planet Peeling): Joie releases a paring slash that can peel an entire satellite.[20]

Satan Drip

Satan Drip (魔王の消化液サタンドリップ Satan Dorippu, literally meaning "Devil's Digestive Fluid"): Joie spits his Appetite Demon's stomach acid at an opponent.[21]

Satan Bomb

Satan Bomb (魔王の点火サタンボム Satan Bomu, literally meaning "Devil's Ignition"): Joie creates a series of explosions through unknown means. These explosions are large enough to be seen from space.[22]

Joie's Warp Kitchen

Warp Kitchen (ワープキッチン Wāpukitchin): Joie forms a glowing orb between his hands and then spreads his arms to the sides, causing it to enlarge and envelope a certain portion of space around him. Within the orb is a dimension in which times flows much more slowly than on the outside, to the point it seems to have stopped. According to Joie, this altered spacetime is a memory of the Gourmet Cells, existing in order to cook ingredients that would otherwise require thousands of years to prepare.[23]

Luminescent Microbes

Luminescent Microbes (発光菌 Hakkōkin): Joie creates a small ball of glowing microbes, which then explodes in a burst of light, blinding an opponent and creating an opening for Joie to strike. It is first used against Starjun.[24]

The following section is non-canon, therefore it is not considered part of the original story.

Satan Slash small

Satan Slash (サタンスラッシュ Satan Surasshu): Joie swings Cinderella to produce a wide air slash capable of holding back opponents of the caliber of Toriko's and Starjun's[25]

Chaos Slash

Chaos Slash (乱斬り Rangiri): Joie rapidly swings Cinderella sending a volley of slashes capable of cutting Sunny's hairs

Land Slash

Land Slash (陸斬り Riku Giri): Joie stabs Cinderella into the ground creating a large wave that blocks enemy attacks

Space Stripped Grater

Space Stripped Grater (空間そぎおろし Kūkan Sogi Oroshi): Joie uses Cinderella to slice the air dispelling any attack in it's path

History[]

Past[]

Joie originated as a spirit long before he could take physical form. When the "Chef Goddess" Froese passed away after her mission to help Acacia, Midora took it upon himself to attempt to revive his foster mother. The body itself was restored, but Froese refused to return because she feared Acacia's Appetite Demon. Instead Acacia revived Froese's body with Joie's soul.[2] With his face similar to that of the Chef Goddess, Joie cloaked himself so that none would question his origins.

First Cooking Festival[]

Two hundred years ago, Joie won the world's first Cooking Festival and became the first to hold the esteemed title of "Super Cook." However, Joie's title was revoked as a result of his breaking several rules (which were not identified) and he was thus eternally banished from Cooking Fest. His title was then defaulted to the runner-up, the future "Gourmet Living Legend" Setsuno. After his disgrace and banishment from the fest, Joie’s name and the records of his false victory were forever buried in the annals of history.[26]

Century Soup Arc[]

During the events of Ice Hell, Colonel Mokkoi discovers there is no more Century Soup left, decides to seek out new ingredients to satisfy him, and contacts Joie for information on which ingredient he should seek out next.[27]

Meteor Garlic Arc[]

After Livebearer's defeat at Gourmet Casino and his subsequent change of heart after Komatsu's inspiring preparation of the Meteor Garlic, Livebearer decides to offer information on preparing a Poison Potato and info on the whereabouts of the great ingredient ATOM to Toriko and his friends, telling them that the only man who holds this information is the "Dark Chef" Joie himself. Joie is later seen talking to the King of Jidar Kingdom and asking the maids to leave. He seems to have quite a vast information network, as he knew about the meeting between IGO and Gourmet Corp. and even about Toriko's coming to the Palace to confront him. He also has knowledge about the 'Secret Notebook' that belonged to Acacia. He tells the King that the Gourmet Casino was useful to gather information on ingredients, but now that Livebearer has served his purpose, they decide to take their leave and proceed to abandon Jidar.

Four Beast Arc[]

After the defeat of the Four Beast, Teppei is shown to be tailing Joie, who compliments Teppei on being able to track him, upon which Teppei states that his specialty is tracking "suspicious guys." Teppei states that Joie is the mastermind behind the Four Beast, but when he inquires about Joie's goal, he is merely warned not to delve deeper into the matter or his death would ensue.

Joa in Desert

Later, Joie is shown to be eating from a bowl of fruit which contains Teppei's head and hand. However, due to the fact that Teppei wakes up afterwards, it is unknown whether this event truly occurs.

After the confrontation with Teppei, Joie goes to the Gourmet Pyramid to look for the Ancient Cookbook that Komatsu obtained when he went there with Toriko and Zebra. Joie is shocked that the book is missing from its spot and leaves swiftly to get it back.

Cooking Festival Arc[]

Joie is mentioned by Mahmai Moi during NEO's secret meeting and it is revealed that he would be arriving at the Cooking Stadium shortly.

After Setsuno realizes that Zaus has made contact with Joie, she reveals that Joie was the champion of the 1st Cooking Festival to Chiyo and the NEO members present, but due to him breaking several rules, he was barred from ever participating in the Cooking Festival again.[26]

Later Joie appears riding a Tokage above the Cooking Stadium with Teppei by his side. Joie comments that this is his first fest since 200 years ago. He begins to scan the creatures in the Cooking Stadium for their life energy and flavor, wondering if he should change them like he has done to Teppei. When he lands in the arena, Zebra launches his Voice Missile at him and the now mind-controlled Teppei. However, Teppei protects Joie and subdues Zebra. Joie reveals to Zebra that Teppei is a completely different person now through his cooking. Two Nitro appear to attack Joie only for him to use Taste Change to turn them into his minions. Setsuno recognizes Joie's knife as Cinderella, the one once owned by the legendary "Chef Goddess" Froese herself, and asks him why he had it in his possession.

Joie answers cryptically, saying that is exactly the reason why he now possesses the knife, and casts 10 Million Slice Fillet at Setsuno, generating an incredibly powerful blast of air which destroys a good portion of the stadium and cuts the sea in half. Even when Setsuno counters with her Flavor Flow, she receives numerous wounds all throughout her body. Setsuno questions Joie's intent and for what he is looking, to which he replies there was a certain chef with whom he would like to speak. Joie proceeds to stab Cinderella into the ground, using Freshness Up: Revitalizing Cut on the three Nitros defeated by Zebra, awakening them and making them even more powerful than before, and sends them after Setsuno, whose feet are bound by Teppei's roots. Upon Jiro's sudden arrival, he expresses mild surprise.[28] Jiro prepares to fight Joie after defeating one of his Nitro. Joie then recalls that Jiro was once called the Rampaging Beast before becoming Acacia's disciple. This makes Jiro wonder how Joie knows so much, but Joie only replies by belittling Jiro for his drinking habit. Jiro calls Joie an idiot and unleashes his Grand Knocking to paralyze almost everything in the Human World and quite possibly the whole planet, much to the shock of everyone present.[29]

Joie is somewhat impressed by this but notices that not even Jiro could stop the rotation of the planet, but still refers to him as a monster, even in retirement. Jiro then silently proceeds to cut Joie's hood to shreds to uncover his identity, but he and everyone present are shocked to see that Joie's true face is that of Froese. As Jiro and Setsuno express their shock, Joie leaps in the air at great speed and uses Cinderella to cut a giant tsunami in half with Sky Cut. However, as Jiro and Setsuno attack him with their combined attacks, Joie reveals a demonic-looking face and blocks the attack with Satan Mince. Joie reverts back to Froese's face as he is confronted by Starjun on his Braga Dragon, holding an unconscious Komatsu, and asks him to hand over the boy, revealing that Starjun was actually the second strongest member of the Gourmet Corp.[30]

Starjun refuses Joie and reveals a third eye on his forehead. Joie expresses his admiration of Starjun's ability to control his Gourmet Cells and remarks that Starjun's birthmark as well as the fact that he was born with Gourmet Cell Genetics. When Starjun challenges Joie to a fight, Joie refuses, saying that with Jiro and Setsuno fighting him at the same time, he would be at a disadvantage in a fight. When Joie hears Midora's voice, after concluding that Midora's and Ichiryu's fight was ended, he orders his Tokage to get the other members of NEO.

Afterwards Joie is seen talking with Mohyan Shaishai and Joejoe about their plans at the NEO Headquarters while the latter prepares the ship to head to the Ends of the Earth. Joie orders the members of his organization to "head out" after suggesting a celebration, likely to carry out their plans.

AIR Arc[]

Joie appears at an unknown floating path in the sky within Gourmet World. Upon approaching the end of the path, he is shown to be looking at a brightly shining object with awe and asking if reaching it has been due to his Food Luck. He reaches the giant spherical orb at the end of the path and claims that it is the fabled Dining Planet, the dining place of nobles. From high above on a pillar within the planet, the Gourmet Nobility casually praise his skill in reaching them. Joie comments that he is likely the second person to have reached them, the first being his "mother" Froese. Joie asks if his blossoming Food Luck is due to the awakening of Acacia's Full Course, to which ANOTHER answers by telling him that the course is indeed a condition for the awakening of Food Luck but it will be the impetus that will truly make Food Luck blossom. Joie realizes that he cannot let anyone else claim the divine Full Course and calls the members of NEO to make sure no one else reaches the ingredients of the Full Course for both his sake and as a service to the Nobles, who he claims should not sully their hands with the task.[31]

PAIR Arc[]

In the Dining Planet, Joie converses with ANOTHER and NEWS about Komatsu's ability to bring out 100% of the flavor in AIR. Joie volunteers to capture AIR but is denied by one of the Gourmet Nobility. Since the countdown to the Gourmet Solar Eclipse has begun, it would be easier to steal it from them.[32] Joie's Appetite Demon appears behind Kaka and stabs the Nitro through the abdomen when it begins explaining the Blue Nitros' true goal to the group. The demon goads them into going to Area 6 and capturing ANOTHER, and then slips into the Back Channel with the incapacitated Kaka in tow.[33]

ANOTHER Arc[]

Joie is seen purifying Life Orbs in the NEO Headquarters laboratory. As he goes to store his sample in the large refrigerator, where there are many more of the same orbs, Joie senses the presence of an "insect" in the base.[34]

After Midora fights and injures several members of NEO, Joie makes his appearance, explaining the abilities of the Life Orbs to Midora, as well as commenting that he was not expecting someone of Midora's strength to arrive in person. Joie offers his greetings and points out that technically it is not the first time that the two have met, referencing his apparent origin as a sort of "offspring" of Froese.[35] Joie attempts to attack Midora but fails, and during that attack Midora does enough damage to Joie to break 8 large-sized Life Orbs. Considering Midora's power, Joie decides to try and talk to Midora and persuade him to join their cause, since he is too powerful to fight directly. Joie reveals how he came to be in possession of Froese's corpse and his connection to Acacia, but Midora refuses to join NEO. Joie is seen being engulfed by his Tokage right before Meteor Spice takes out NEO Headquarters.[2]

As Teppei rescues and escapes with Zaus, he asks the chef about Joie's Golden Cookware. Joie with Tokage dodges Midora's direct attack, which does massive damage to NEO's Ark and Headquarters. Tokage appears at Midora's feet and Joie drags him into the creature and, to protect the base from further damage, moves them to the Landsea Forest in Area 2. Midora points out the futility of such a move and Joie agrees that with the power Midora demonstrated in devastating the Human World, it would be possible for Midora to destroy the planet, not unlike the other two disciples of Acacia. However, of the three only Midora, the weakest, as Joie points out, would do such a thing. Joie creates a Warp Kitchen around himself and Midora and explains the properties of the space-time. Midora is surprised when Joie pulls out Cinderella, Froese's kitchen knife. Joie continues to explain about the use of Warp Kitchen's time dilation, particularly in preparing parts of Acacia's Full Course, reducing the vast amount of time spent cooking them. As Joie's Appetite Demon points out, compared to the time spent cooking the planet, Midora's life is short and meaningless and his anger is a mere annoyance, not worth wasting time on. Midora threatens that despite how fleeting his anger may seem, it will carve into the cells a fear which will never fade. Midora offers to reveal his Full Course and Joie accepts.[36]

As battles across the world continue, Midora remains undeterred when Acacia eventually destroys Jiro in combat as Joie keeps him ignorant of the outside world by maintaining his Warp Kitchen. Joie being at a disadvantage against Midora comments on the Gourmet Corp. boss' strength, stating his doubts on whether there could be anyone to defeat Midora in combat. Joie, however, assures himself that he has Midora cornered when it comes to food. Midora simply tells Joie to fight him seriously. Midora becomes instantly alert over Joie as the Dark Chef decides to reform his body to take on the full appearance of the former "Chef Goddess" Froese in order to manipulate his opponent's strong attachment to his memories.[37] Joie's bacteria slice Midora's left arm, burn his right arm, and devour part of his head, but Midora heals himself and consumes the bacteria. When all of Midora's attack begin missing Joie, the chef blames Froese's Food Luck, the trait for which Acacia greatly desired Froese. Joie slices Midora's head with Sky Cut but Midora heals instantly. However, the bacteria Midora ate begin dissolving his body from the inside, and Joie follows it up with Satan Mince. Unimpressed, Midora invokes Minority World and Joie vanishes. Once free of the Warp Kitchen, Midora senses GOD. Joie then appears as Froese behind him and takes the moment of hesitation to seal Midora into a Golden Can. Exhausted, Joie drops to a knee and wonders if he succeeded only because of Food Luck. Laughing the thought away, he stands in anticipation of GOD.[38]

GOD Arc[]

Joie is excited when he senses GOD emerge.[39] He creates a hole in the ground, generates a small Warp Kitchen around the Golden Can, and drops it in the hole, bidding farewell to Midora. He then calls Tokage to take him to Acacia and GOD.[40] After Neo eats Jiji, Acacia and Joie walk through Starjun's Blaze Dome and confront the Four Heavenly Kings.[41]

With the Heavenly Kings in front of GOD, Acacia is flattered that he has become famous for creating the Gourmet Era, something for which he claims Joie should show respect. Joie simply agrees to Acacia's claims and questions Toriko's anger. Starjun threatens the Dark Chef as Joie prepares a Back Channel, claiming they have no time to chat in front of GOD itself. As Toriko questions Acacia of Jiro's fate, Joie attempts to claim that he was also victorious against his own opponent, but Toriko states that Joie did not win. As Acacia distracts the Heavenly Kings and Starjun with his supposed story, Joie attempted to use his microbes to infect the group; however, thanks to Aimaru's microbes, the Four Heavenly Kings and Starjun are unaffected. With Acacia confronting Toriko, the rest of the Heavenly Kings and Starjun prepare to combat Joie, who instead prepares to cook GOD and becomes uneasy when he notices its odd behavior.[42]

Joie deduces that somehow GOD is being prepared. As he attempts to go for GOD, Sunny stops Joie in his tracks. With Joie growing impatient, he releases three former members of the Gourmet Corp. to battle the Heavenly Kings. Sunny and Coco respond by bringing in Tommyrod and Grinpatch to the battle, making former Gourmet Corp. members fight each other instead. While they fight, Joie goes for GOD once again and sees Otake take on cooking GOD. Joie attacks Otake, but Sunny uses his hair to absorb it albeit incompletely. With the rest of the Heavenly Kings revealing their powerful Appetite Demons, Joie decides battle with them and tells Acacia to take GOD, but the battle between Toriko and Acacia continued before he could tell him.[43] With the fight for GOD raging between groups, Joie manages to handle fighting the three members of the Heavenly Kings after a full hour in his Back Channel. Despite having powerful opponents, Joie's Gourmet Luck gave him advantage. Joie then prepares to fight Starjun, who questions if Joie knows whose child Starjun is, much to the confusion of the Dark Chef.[44]

As the fighting continues, Joie rhetorically asks as to why he would know or care about Starjun's heritage. Starjun replies that it is simply not him but another person in the area. Joie questions as to what exactly would Starjun do should he know of Starjun's heritage and the latter replies by stating that he would do nothing. However, Starjun claims that it is karma that he is there to stop both Joie and Acacia. Joie simply replies that fate is something people without Gourmet Luck would say, and claims Starjun's words as excuse for losing a fight before it starts. Joie attacks with Luminescent Microbes and follows it with 100 Million Slice Fillet, but Starjun manages to avoid the attacks and retaliate. With Starjun's speed and Third Eye assisting him, Joie claims that the 'fate' which Starjun claims is simply his own youth, and Starjun claims that his confidence is not without its own basis. As the two continue to do battle, the Eight Kings arrive in the battlefield to assist in the destruction of Acacia.[45]

The Eight Kings' arrival turns the tide of battle as they attempt to stop Acacia from attaining GOD. When the Dragon King shoots its laser towards Acacia, Joie attempts to stop the attack to no avail. Angered, Joie goes to fight the Eight Kings directly but is stopped by Starjun.[46]

More fighters arrive at the scene, but Joie remains focused on Starjun. Their fight becomes more dangerous with Starjun gaining an upper hand. With a deadly strike toward Joie, Starjun is impressed that Joie survived his Burner Squall, blaming Joie's Gourmet Luck. Joie deduces that Starjun's accuracy and speed are boosted by combining his Third Eye's ability and his usage of layered Back Channels. Starjun questions if Joie's observations are thanks to Gourmet Luck once again and if even with that knowledge, he knows how to deal with it. Joie replies by unleashing the full extent of his Gourmet Luck.[47]

When Starjun is distracted by Acacia stabbing Toriko, Joie takes the opportunity to land a large blow to Starjun. Before they could continue their battle, Acacia manages to eat a fully prepared portion of GOD, allowing Acacia to fully unleash his own Appetite Demon, Neo, into the physical world.[48] As Acacia's Appetite Demon take on the Eight Kings, Joie continues to battle Starjun. Joie notices that Starjun's Third Eye is losing its effect thanks to Joie's Gourmet Luck. However despite the advantage, Joie's opponent simply claims that while it is powerful, it is also limited. With Joie claiming that his attention is needed elsewhere, he continues to expend his Gourmet Luck against Starjun, who continues to see it as Joie wasting his Gourmet Luck until it runs out. Joie claims that even Midora could not overwhelm the power of Gourmet Luck and was defeated after Midora exhausted his own power; however, Starjun questions if Joie knew whether Midora really ran out of power, and reminds Joie that the true power of Midora lies in his capabilities to copy fully any form of techniques, regardless of their nature thanks to the Mirror Neurons Midora possesses.[49]

With the Eight Kings continuing to rid the world of Neo, Acacia manages to eat his own Full Course, giving him the full control of his own Appetite Demon. Joie eventually manages to defeat Starjun and finally sees that Acacia has achieved their true goal, for Acacia to consume his own Appetite Demon.[50]

Fulfilling their task, Acacia calls for Joie as they need to leave for the Farthest Land. Joie boasts his victory to Acacia, but Starjun manages to get up despite the damage he had taken. Joie is surprised that his opponent managed to remain standing despite taking on the full extent of his Gourmet Luck. Starjun continues to speak in regards to what he was searching for and eventually claims that the ingredient he was looking for was none other than Gourmet Luck itself. Confused at the situation, Joie questions Starjun, who replies that thanks to Gourmet Luck, he finally found the person he shared his life with, who turned out to be Toriko himself. Surprised at the revelation, Joie further questions Starjun, eventually asking whose children Starjun and Toriko are. Acacia eventually calls for Joie and states that while Joie had been talking to Starjun, his own appetite is raining down on the planet as Dinner of Kings. As Acacia's appetite rains down on Earth, it instantly disappears, much to their confusion, and Midora reveals himself.[51]

Joie questions how Midora managed to escape from his imprisonment in the Golden Can, but Midora ignores him and converses with Acacia. Midora accuses Acacia of killing Froese in order for him to give rise to Joie. Acacia claims that while the story is not completely false, Joie himself was thought to be Acacia's child taking over Froese to become Joie. Joie rejects the claims but Midora uses his Intimidation to revert Joie's body into that of Froese. Midora deduces that Joie himself is not Acacia's miscarried child but rather a form of reincarnation of Froese herself which had taken a male form thanks to the effects of the legendary soup PAIR's ability to change one's sex and gender. Despite all of these claims, Acacia paid no attention to them and simply saw Froese and Joie as nothing more than chefs with skills that he needed. With Midora seeing Acacia's true nature, the two do battle. Joie joins in the battle, but his attack misses Midora, who tells Joie that he has not yet revealed his Full Course.[52] After that Joie then fades away from existence.

Anime and Manga Differences[]

  • In the anime, Joie uses Cinderella to cut giant earth pillars formed from the Grand Knocking, while in the manga Joie used it to cut a tsunami in half.
  • In the anime, Joie briefly transforms into a monstrous version of himself. This form is clearly female while in the manga Joie is clearly male.
  • In the anime, the events that took place after Jiro cut Joie's hood off are drastically altered.
    • In the manga the two simply exchange attacks and Joie later confronts Starjun about handing over Komatsu, but he is forced to retreat after the fall of the Meteor Spice.
    • In the anime, after Jiro cut his hood and then they and Setsuno exchanged their attacks, Joie gets the upper hand and attacks Setsuno but Jiro then blocks the attack with his body but ends up having a hole cut into his torso. Joie then tries to kill them off but is stopped by a Flying Fork from Toriko who arrives with Starjun and both join forces to stop Joie. This notable difference from the manga heavily changed the plot of the anime from that of the manga to the point where the events from the manga can no longer progress accordingly.
