The Swallowtail Bat (アゲハコウモリ Agehakōmori) is a species of bat with wings patterned like those of a Swallowtail or Monarch Butterfly.
Anatomy[]
Swallowtail Bats are small brown-skinned bats that are no larger than a human's head and can grow to be about 70 centimeters in length and weigh 1 kilogram. They have somewhat large heads, which are disproportionate to their bodies likely due to their very large and pupil-less blue eyes. They have rather sharp teeth, which shows off their carnivorous nature.
Their most notable feature is their bright and colorful wings, which are covered in uniquely colored and spicy scales, and the pattern of their wings resembles those of a Swallowtail or Monarch Butterfly.

Behavior[]
They live in colonies and are cowardly by nature, so other than catching prey to eat, they rarely leave the safety of their caves.[1]
Powers and Abilities[]
Being that they spend their lives in dark caves, Swallowtail Bats can see perfectly in the dark which gives them an advantage at hunting prey that is not native to their element. They are quite fast little flyers and since they usually travel in groups they can be quite overwhelming, however, they are in fact cowardly and only go after weak prey, but they can be easily subdued by skilled hunters. The Swallowtail Bats of the Gattsuki Continent have been shown to posses the ability to produce ultrasonic screams to attack prey and use their spicy scales to disorient them as well.[2]
As Food[]
Their bodies are not used for food, but the scales on their wings are used as a spice, called "Swallowtail Bat Spice", a tasty necessity in the spice cabinets of chefs worldwide.[1]
History[]
Puffer Whale Arc[]
When Toriko, Coco, and Komatsu are trekking through the Labyrinthine Cave, a group of Swallowtail Bats appear from within the cave towards their direction. Toriko catches some in his mouth, slashes some with Knife, and skewers others with Fork, and Coco paralyzes another group with Poison Dressing. Coco realizes that the bats weren't attacking but were actually fleeing from something, which Toriko and Coco discover is the dreaded Devil Serpent.
Varieties[]
In the video game series, the Swallowtail Bats are shown to have a variety of different subspecies:
